The family mediation voucher scheme is designed to support parents in resolving their family law disputes outside of court. The Government established the scheme to reduce backlogs in the family court and to encourage more people to consider mediation as a means of resolving their disputes, particularly regarding child arrangements. To support this, a financial contribution of up to £500 towards the costs of mediation is provided, if you are eligible.
What is the Family Mediation Voucher Scheme?
The family mediation voucher scheme offers a financial contribution of up to £500 to assist families in covering the costs of mediation. This initiative aims to make mediation more accessible and affordable, reducing the need for lengthy and stressful court proceedings.
Who is Eligible for the Voucher?
Eligibility for the voucher is determined during the Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM). If your case involves:
- A dispute or application regarding a child
- A dispute or application regarding family financial matters where you are also involved in a dispute/application relating to a child
You should be eligible. The scheme is open to mediation participants who attended a MIAM on or after 26 March 2021. However, the £500 voucher cannot be used to pay for the MIAM itself, but for the mediation sessions that follow.
How Do I Receive the Voucher?
Once you have confirmed you will proceed with mediation and your mediator has confirmed eligibility, they will apply for the voucher funding on your behalf. The voucher funds are paid directly to the mediator after all mediation sessions are concluded. There is no physical voucher, and you do not need to apply for it yourself.
Vouchers are limited in number and will be offered to eligible parties until they are no longer available. Your mediator will inform you if vouchers are available.
Why Use Family Mediation?
Family mediation offers several benefits:
- Control Over Outcomes: Unlike court, where a judge makes decisions, mediation allows you and the other party to decide on arrangements.
- Child-Focused: Mediation helps you prioritize your child's interests.
- Cost-Effective: Mediation is generally cheaper than court proceedings.
- Less Stressful: The mediation process is less adversarial and more supportive.
- Efficient: Mediation can resolve disputes faster than court.
Family mediation provides a structured and supportive environment to sort out arrangements for children, divide assets and money, and determine living arrangements. It can also help when circumstances change, necessitating new arrangements.
